The Zone Diet

Barry Spears, a former researcher in biotechnology at the Massachusettes Institute of Technology, developed The Zone Diet. The Zone refers to a physiological state which hormones, goverened by the food you eat, are maintained with, in zones that are not too high and not too low. The benefits of maintaining your zone are decreased likelihood of cardiovascular disease, great physical shape and increased fat loss.

The Zone Diet program is based on controlling insulin. Insulin control is achieved by balancing proteins and carbohydrates at each meal. The insulin control component of The Zone Diet program can be defined as a moderate-carbohydrate, moderate-protein, and moderate-fat dietary program. The maxium amount of low-fat protein at any any meal should be no bigger than the size and thickness of the palm of your hand. Carbohydrates should come from vegetables and fruits, with starches used sparingly as condiments. Finally, most of the fat should consist of heart healthy monounsaturated fat.

The goal of The Zone Diet is to keep a hormonal balance between fat-storing insulin and the hormone glucagons. Glucagen is responsible for releasing stored glucose from the liver when it is needed. Maintaining a balance between the two hormones is achieved by limiting the amount of certain food groups.

Also known as the 40-30-30 plan (40% carbohydrate, 30% protein, 30% fat), the Zone Diet works on the premise that many hundreds of years ago, our bodies were designed to handle the demands of a diet largly based on meats, fruits and vegetables. The Zone Diet strategy deemphasizes the intake of carbohydrates found in pastas, breads, rice and potatoes, and encourages the consumption of fruits and vegetables to reach a more balanced ratio in one's diet.
